2010-2011 Kindergarten Program

Our Mission Statement:

We empower children to become emerging learners through stimulating instruction, creative educational curriculum and a positive learning environment.

Program Overview

Our Kindergarten class is comprised of five and six year olds who will begin 1st Grade in the fall of the following year. This class focuses on the Big 5 in reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Fluency. Our reading program extends itself to include opportunities for continued understanding in Social Studies, Science and Computer technology.  Our mathematical focus includes enhancing number recognition, value, writing, manipulation, counting to 100 and beginning addition and subtraction.

All students will receive weekly music and physical education instruction.  Our music program includes beginning piano lessons.

We have the incredible opportunity to offer three consecutive days without holiday interruptions.  This class runs from 8:30am to 1pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Children need to bring a cold lunch each day of school.

Staffing

This class consists of sixteen students, one certified teacher and one assistant. Our staff completes a background check and an infant/child CPR certification class each year.

Curriculum

Through an academic focus, we instruct our young students in the following skill areas:

• Language and Listening
• Science Exploration
• Social Interaction
• Cultural Diversity
• Music and Art
• Creative Play
• Citizenship
• Gross/Fine Motor Skills
• Sign Language
• Reading and Writing Skills

Program Design

Our Kindergarten program is designed for interactive learning. Students begin each class session with some independent work followed by more of an instructional setting; this is where letters, sight words, vocabulary, numbers, music, literature and other focused skills are introduced. Students are then offered opportunities to explore and learn in individualized centers that are both required activities and independent activities.  Weekly we will monitor student’s skills and adapt activities to reinforce concepts that each individual student may need reviewed.  Our resources include a sand and water table, complete play kitchen, listening center, computers (this includes a link that will be used daily along with our reading curriculum), art easels, Thomas-the-Train play center, musical instruments, magnetic wall, educational games and puzzles, a variety of building materials, reading library, a writing area, dramatic play and parachute play activities.
